Founded in 1922 as a residential community, Pacific Palisades is located on the "Westside" of Los Angeles. It is nestled between the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu, and flanked by the lush, green Santa Monica Mountains and the sandy beaches of the blue Pacific. Six major canyons, winding their way from the Santa Monica Mountains to the sea, create beauty, contrast and interest to this coastal village. Panoramic vistas prevail throughout the Palisades, offering sweeping views of the ocean shoreline, city lights, forested canyons and dramatic, undeveloped mountain landscapes. The Palisades' location allows it to enjoy clean air and provide an ideal mild climate cooled by sea breezes, with mean summer temperature at 69.2 degrees and mean winter temperature at 56.1 degrees. Average rainfall, normally between October and May, is 15.53 inches. One can usually plan outdoor events without the threat of inclement weather from June to September.
Today, with a population of about 26,000 and about 500 businesses, including retail shops, restaurants, and professional services, the "village" atmosphere still persists. Personal concern over the quality of the community remains high, bolstered by support from homeowners associations and numerous philanthropic and community organizations. There is a real "hometown" atmosphere and several events each year bring out residents to participate in community activities. Pacific Palisades is in close proximity to UCLA, Pepperdine and Loyola-Marymount Universities and is accessible by Pacific Coast Highway (the famous Route 1 which winds its way down the entire California coastline) and the legendary Sunset Boulevard. It is close to freeways and can easily access the L.A. International Airport, world class museums, Restaurant Row, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
The Palisades has outstanding public and private schools.The schools in Pacific Palisades are ranked high in the state. Three of the public schools in this area have been designated as California Distinguished Schools: Palisades Charter High School, 2005; Palisades Charter Elementary School, 2005; and Marquez Charter Elementary School, 2008.
